Rio Secreto: The discovery of Río Secreto, previously known as Pool Tunich, has brought much excitement to Quintana Roo.  This system of caves, formed over centuries by an underground river, is located only a few miles from Playa del Carmen. It is by far the longest partially flooded cave in the Yucatan Peninsula, but what makes Río Secreto even more special is the fact that it is semi-sunken.  Most caves found in the Yucatan are underwater, and if you want to explore them, you must receive specialized training in cave diving. That requires lots of practice and study, as well as a hefty investment in diver certification and dive gear. Río Secreto has more than 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) of semi-sunken cave mapped out with 15 natural outlets located in different areas. There’s nothing else like it!

Imagine finding a hole in the ground and lowering yourself into the unknown where you uncover a breathtaking underground world untouched for thousands of years.  That is truly how this underground river system was first discovered. Before 2007, almost no one had entered Río Secreto except for the man who first found it. Since then, Río Secreto has become a protected nature reserve where you can safely explore the Yucatan Peninsula’s most awe-inspiring underground universe. info

Hidden worlds is the Yucatan Peninsula's best known location for exploring the fascinating world of cenotes. Its system of underground caverns and waterways lay hidden within dense tropical foliage over many centuries. In the 1980s a small band of adventurous and environmentally active divers led by Gordon "Buddy" Quattlebaum followed up on the tales of these secret spaces, told to them by Mayan friends who spoke of a vast network of sparkling caverns and lakes hidden deep beneath the jungle floor (Hidden Worlds lies within special Mayan land reserves). With great attention to the long-term preservation of nature's wealth, the cenotes of Hidden Worlds became known to scuba divers around the world through numerous magazine articles, guide books, television documentaries and even cinema. Today the wonders of Hidden Worlds are available to everyone. The Hidden Worlds team has worked hard to provide an experience of the Riviera Maya's cenotes and surrounding flora and fauna that is safe, accessible and faithful to nature's original design; No paved roads, "simulated" caves or heavy commercialization. We do have a small and friendly jungle cafe serving delicious home-cooked lunches and a local crafts boutique operated by and for the local populace (check it out - their prices are really good!) but that's about the closest thing you'll find to anything commercial here. info

Sian Ka’an, Mayan for "where the sky is born", was established on January 20, 1986 and became part of the program “The Man and the Biosphere” by UNESCO, with a conservation challenge was to integrate human activities without damaging the ecosystem and all life within its territory. A year later, in 1987 Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean, until December 2010 occupied approximately 650,000 hectares, equivalent to 1.6 million acres, over 120 kilometers from north to south, between the municipalities of Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. In agreement between the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONAMP) and the Secretariat of Agrarian Reform (SRA) have been added 319 000 hectares, bringing its area is 969 000 hectares.

The reserve is divided in 3 different areas for conservation:

  • Core area: Strictly protected, human activities are restricted because this area includes the best preserved ecosystems and require special permits to visit to conduct scientific research
  • Buffer zone, surrounds the core area, their activities should not affect the conservation objectives of the core area.
  • Transition Area: Includes areas with a greater degree of human intervention and is often the site of sustainable development projects.

The reserve has different ecosystems including low and medium forests, savannas, and a portion of the second longest Barrier Reef in the world with 110 km in length, called the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, and 23 small registered archaeological sites.Sian Ka’an hosts 103 species of mammals and 336 species of birds including a large number of migratory songbirds, has more than 1,200 species of vascular plants, its beaches are important breeding areas for sea turtles: as the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), loggerhead (Caretta caretta), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), wetlands are home to manatees and two species of endangered crocodiles.
